Dear MTV, I Want My Life Back.

Posted by Lady Mel On Monday, September 13, 2010 2 comments

First and foremost, I want to thank Lady Gaga for sweeping the award shows with 8 awards including Video of the Year! I love the name of her next album, "Born This Way",  her outfits especially this late Alexander McQueen ensemble from his last collection and her ten second ballad of her "Born This Way" single. I want to know why MTV did not allow her to perform. I would trade this show for a two-hour Lady Gaga performance in a heartbeat. Usher and Florence and the Machines had the best performances of the night.

If I have not mentioned any one else, you either sucked and were extremely boring to watch. My worst critiques:
  • I love Chelsea Handler but as a VMAs host, she does not work for me. There were few laughs coming my way and I think at the beginning of the show, she seemed very nervous.
  • Taylor Swift looked like a 30 year old woman with heavy makeup on stage. I wished Kanye West had interrupted her again. It would have been more entertaining. Was she playing the guitar?
  • Rihanna looked like a ginger hot tranny mess with no singing talent. Eminem and Rihanna do not make a good music collaboration.
  • Ciara gave a very random and weak thirty second performance.
  • Justin Bieber lip-synced.
I will not watch another VMAs unless it is held at NYC's Radio City Music Hall. As discussed with other fans via BlogTV, the best Video Music Awards, the most memorable VMAs moments, happened in the heart of the Big Apple.

I had high hopes for this year's ceremony, but it was as stale as bread. And it is disappointing because I can't trust MTV to provide me with the best music video experience anymore. If I had to rate this show, I would give it a 5/10 and that is because Lady Gaga was there. If she was nominated but did not show up, I would not have watched it. Way to go MTV.

What do you think about this VMAs? What could have been better about it?

One Year Later, The 2010 VMAs Strikes Back!

Posted by Lady Mel On Friday, September 10, 2010 1 comments

I started this blog over three years ago. I played with the idea that I can write for a larger audience. On and off. On and off. It was not until around this time last year that I made blogging top priority with my hilarious 2009 VMAs post. Things have changed over the course of the year with volunteer work, a new perspective on life, and an opportunity to gossip about popular culture like it is no one's business. And now I am here to bring that fun and passionate personality once again with a stellar preview of this year's MTV 2010 VMAs Awards.

I used to be a big MTV fan in the 1990s and early 2000s. Undressed. TRL. The early Real World seasons. Fanatic. You named it. I saw pretty much saw it. Now I barely watch it because of MTV's commitment to reality-TV programming than actual music. However, I do carve out some time every year to watch the Video Music Awards because many of my favorite artists either present awards, win awards, or perform on stage like beggers wanting an award. I forecast this year will be different. Here are the top three reasons why you should watch the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards:

1. This is the year of the Lady Gaga.

Not the year of Beyonce (that was last year) or the year of Justin Bieber. If you do not know who Lady Gaga is right now, you must be living under a rock in the outskirts of outer space. She is everywhere. She is the most popular pop star and social media queen of our generation so far. When mankind invented the word "ubiquitous" for the English language, you can see her picture inside a Webster dictionary next to the word. Currently, she holds the title of Twitter Queen with over six million followers and counting, beating out the ubiquitous crowned Twitter prince, Justin Bieber. Sweet.

I thought about this long and hard. Why did not Lady Gaga win any VMAs last year? Well she was still in her underground phrase of her career. People knew about her but did not catch on until her VMA debut "Paparazzi" performance last September. With eleven thirteen nominations under her belt including Video of the Year, Lady Gaga will reign as this year's Moon Man queen. I wonder, with her ridiculous sense of fashion, who and what will she wear to the event? Entertain us Gaga, although you are not performing this year! Maybe she will. :)

2. Chelsea Handler, A Funny Female Host for Once

What does Chelsea Handler and I have in common besides being Jersey girls? We love dark humor, sarcasm, celebrity gossip and brutal honesty. I watch her amazing show, "Chelsea Lately" on the E! Show occasionally every week and I think her little antics and sarcasm will reshape MTV, its VMA image, and its low ratings.

I tweeted her once. It read along the lines of, "If anyone could save the VMAs, its u @chelseahandler! Grats I will be watching and Chelsea, if Kanye interrupts u, beat his ass for me. :)". I hope Chuy is on stage with her. And speaking of Kanye West, here is my top reason why you should watch the VMA's this year.

3. The Unpredictability of the Show:

Remember in 2003 when Britney Spears gave that infamous lip-lock to Madonna on stage? Remember the infamous "Taylor Swift, I am going to let you finish" comments Kanye West made to Taylor Swift before she made her Best Female Award speech last year? Those little moments in VMA history will always be a part of the collective consciousness and American pop culture. These moments keep tabloids busy and wealthy, the paparazzi the celebrity fiasco they drive for, and the American public a reason to read those tabloids and view those paparazzi photos. This year, Glee cast members and True Blood's Joe Manganiellio (squeals ^_^) will be award presenters. You never know what is going to happen or who will show up.

Although I do not like the direction that MTV, as a channel and global brand, has headed in the last five to ten years, I will say is that the MTV Video Music Awards is one of the last MTV gems that I will continue to watch until it gets stale like bread. For the last five years from moving to Miami to Las Vegas back to its home in NYC, the VMAs was heading in that direction, but last year's VMAs revived the craziness that is the VMAs. We just have to watch the Jersey Shore cast but seriously, I do not know why MTVs thinks these people are entertaining enough to produce two seasons of a reality show around their lives and then invite them to this award show. Oh, I forgot, $$$.

So sit back and relax. The 2010 MTV Video Awards will premiere live this Sunday, September 12th at 9:00pm EST in LA. Performers include Justin Bieber, Usher, Paramore, and Drake. I am so excited! Who are you excited to see at this year's VMAs and why?

Your 2010 MTV Movie Awards Preview Guide

This year's MTV Movie Awards ceremony looks quite dull. All of this summer's promising mega blockbusters will be nominated next year, so you will have to watch through an entire two-hour show with tasteless nominated movies like New Moon, Dear John, and the humorless Hangover.

But never fear! I have this whole entertainment experience in perspective. There are twelve categories this year, four in which I feel are the most important to discuss on this blog. Here are my predictions:

1. Best Movie, Avatar: The movie has made over a billion dollars in ticket and DVD sales alone. Secondly, the movie is a cultural phenomenon. I even dubbed it as the "Lady Gaga of CGI film making", yet I still have not seen it. The movie did not win Best Picture at the Oscars, so you already know that it will win for Best Movie because 1.) the fans are the ones voting this time around, not the Academy. 2.) everyone except me saw it so it will win. However, I would laugh out loud if New Moon or Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland won the highest honor of the night.

2. Global Superstar, Johnny Depp: Hands down. He is quirky and sexy. He is a method actor. He is not a douchebagging celebrity that seeks the limelight every chance he can get. He is an ubiquitous and well-respected human being. Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson. You are not going to win this. End of story. And even if the Twilight fans pick Taylor or Robert, they could never stoop to Johnny Depp's level as an actor, father, and Hollywood heartthrob. I think I can rest my case.

3. Best Villain, Christophe Waltz: Landslide Victory. The man played an anti-Jewish, Nazi officer (Hans Landa) so excruciatingly well in Inglorious Bastards. The part where he chocked Diane Kruger's character to death was nefarious. Helena Bonham Carter does not even stand a chance against Waltz in this category. Sorry.

4. Best Breakthrough Star, Gabourey Sidibe. Gabby has had an amazing year. She was nominated for an Oscar, Golden Globe, and SAG award for her poignant portrayal of Precious. She was on SNL not that long ago and although I hate the SNL writers for not coming up with better material for her on the show (well SNL blows anyway), at least the American public was exposed to her. Plus, she seems very down-to-earth and unmarked by the social and beauty pressures of Hollywood. Gabby makes me believe that you can be black, big, beautiful, and successful in a world where critics shoved needles down your throat just because you need breast implants or liposuction.

Watch the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, hosted by Aziz Ansari on Sunday, June 6th at 9pm EST/8PM CST on MTV. You can vote for your favorite actor and movie until June 6th here. If 47 million people voted every week to decide the next American Idol, you can vote too.  What are your predictions and will you see it?

Tech Diva: Will YouTube Become The Next MTV?

Posted by Lady Mel On Tuesday, April 6, 2010 6 comments

When I was a senior at Smith College, I took a Sociology of Rock Music class. The last paper of my undergraduate career was all dedicated to the death of the cultural global brand that once was Music Television (MTV). My professor was a bit skeptical about the whole ordeal, you know. MTV was still around, even though YouTube and Myspace continued to dominate the online entertainment space. A year has passed. I could not have predicted such a catastrophe, if it was written across my forehead.

No more TRL. No more music. No more iconic MTV logo. Do not get me started on these dumb reality shows! Do you want to know why I will only watch MTV for the awards shows now? When I heard that the cast members of Real World: Jersey Shore were given $10,000 per episode contracts to produce a second season! Oh my fucking god. MTV, what have you done? You substituted a generation of wonderful music shows such as TRL, Diary, Fanatic, and MTV Jams for a bunch of tasteless, attention whores? MTV is like Tiger Woods. It was married to popular music and well-respected by celebrities who acknowledged it as the catalyst that launched their music careers. But it ended up sleeping with Snookie instead. (Thank god I do not watch Jersey Shore!). MTV has clearly lost its morals and is only here to cash in on the latest reality show craze it helped generate in the early 1990s instead of being relevant again.

YouTube could end up on the same path to self-destruction. Unlike MTV, I will continue to use YouTube to watch videos because it is still relevant to me. After reading Wired Magazine's "5 Secrets to YouTube Success" article, I realized that YouTube has come a long way since its founding in 2005. YouTube has transformed average people and local bands into semi-famous individuals overnight and I hope that the exchange of communication and ideas continues to thrive between YouTube vloggers and their followers.

But after playing around with the new YouTube layout, I learned that YouTube needs to rethink its website design strategy. I initially thought the new video page was a April Fool's joke. However, when I realized it wasn't, I spammed Twitter, tweeting that YouTube needs to figure out who is on its user-experience team before it makes another decision because the homepage is horrendous. It may have taken YouTube ten months to listen to user feedback to create this new layout, but it needs to reconsider this disaster. First of all, I do not like this thumbs up, thumbs down policy that YouTube implemented to replace the five-star system. What if I like a video, but think it is not worthy enough of a thumbs up? So, the rating of the video is somewhere down the middle. With the new system, there is no middle ground. With the old system, I could have easily graded the video with three stars.

Secondly, I hate the excess of white space on the left side of every page. I think the font size and columns (ie. related videos) were rearranged to give the users a more "user-friendly environment". Despite the influx of spam and racist comments, I personally like the old layout a lot better. This is coming from someone who is a YouTube consumer, not a vlogger. I knew where to go, which buttons to press. Now each page looks bare and out of place. The only new feature that I like is the you can now easily share your favorite YouTube videos with your Facebook friends. Other than that, nothing.

I am glad that the people that I have talked to in person and on Twitter about this issue agree with me 100%. We as fans should contact YouTube and demand the old video page back somehow because I do not want YouTube to be the next MTV. If more fans complain about it, then YouTube will get the message. If they don't, YouTube might continue to develop new design changes without our opinions and eventually go downhill, allowing another online video-sharing website will take its place.

What are your thoughts on the new YouTube video page? What should YouTube do next? Is MTV a has been?

I'm Back and Better than Ever!

I am back from a well-deserved vacation playing WOW (its all over for now) and job hunting online (wait I still am ><). God, four months has passed. However, I will make the commitment to writing a blog or two everyday from now on since I'm at home and unemployed at the moment. Here are the crazy things that have been bothering me in the past few weeks.

1. Kanye West is a jackass.
2. President Obama is now the man because he thinks he acted like a jackass.
3. Depression/WOW can be a hell of a drug.

4. Will people and politicans of all political associations come together and create a new health care reform bill? Talk talk talk. Yet, people die every hour around the world.

5. Job Hunting is a fun, stressful, exciting, intimidating experience. I did not get that Google position I've applied in late April yet I am hopeful things will come through for me.

6. Beyonce needs to bring her A game and create NEW videos. No more Sasha Fierce. No more backup dancer THEMED videos. Because between you and me Beyonce, Lady Gaga is getting up there and you better watch out.

7. I actually loved the VMAs last Sunday after a five year hiatus.

8. Cartoon Network is not what it used too in the late 1990s. ><

9. I have to be more realistic in an unrealistic world. Yet, I have to keep some idealism in there somehow.

I think that is all for today.. Now, I feel sooo much better :D!!
