Will these bad ass rebels let the pain go away and live their lives as "Losers" ? Absolutely not. This is an action-packed movie for crying out loud! With the help of Aisha (Zoe Saldana), the group seeks its much needed revenge on the very system that turned against them. I have not read the comic books, but let's just say this movie is a bit reminiscent of the 1980s "A-Team" TV series, in some respects. You have your daredevil team leader, followed by your hot chick, pretty boy, gadget expect, sniper extraordinaire, and other characters that fall in between. Ironically, this movie, which opens in theaters April 23th, comes out about two months before the "A Team" movie! Ha, Karma does have a funny way of revealing itself in the movie business.
Expect lots of action, hilarious one-liners, and a budding, sexual romance between Zoe's and Jeffrey's characters. Have you not seen Morgan on Grey's Anatomy? I already seen the trailer online and on TV, so trust me. Hollywood has a way of putting a sex scene or two in almost every movie nowadays. I think it is highly uncreative, but it is a definitive method of getting the horny guys into the movie theaters. Also, Chris Evans from the "Fantastic Four" movie franchise and British actor Idris Elba also star in the movie so you know it will be pure comedy and entertainment! Did I say, Jeffrey Dean Morgan will play a bad boy? *Faints* So watch this movie if you do not want to watch a clever, cheesy, yet action-packed alternative to the "A-Team" movie. I am still flabbergasted that Jennifer Aniston gets paid millions and millions of dollars for starring and producing the same, repetitive girl-next-door movies. Do not get me wrong. I bet Aniston is a very nice and generous person in real life. But I do not see the talent. Luckily, Scottish heartthrob and actor Gerard Butler signed on to do this Bounty Hunter movie with her coming out March 16th 19th nationwide or I would not even bothered writing this movie critique in the first place.
In the movie, Gerard Butler plays a bounty hunter who must find and arrest his ex-wife (played by Aniston) after witnessing a murder and skipping bail. I know Gerry is going to play his goofy, sexy side, but what about Aniston? Aniston does not come across as a natural funny person, even when I see her on the old Friends episodes. But with Gerard Butler around, I think he will help her out in that department.
Plus, I know that old feelings will resurface between their two characters, so watch out for the sexual chemistry! I predict that this movie is going to make between $30-50 million dollars its opening weekend. Butler has a very strong Internet fan-base and where Gerry goes, the fans and haters will soon to follow. So, if you want some laughs and sexy situations, go watch this movie this March!
I love Robert Downey Jr. from a distance. He is pretty hot but he is not on my top list of Hollywood hunks. There is this great charisma and confidence about him that allows him to engender any film role into something awesome. I was amazed at the first five minutes of the first movie when his character Tony Stark, the arrogant, yet super smart mechanical engineering billionaire, introduces his company's newest missile to the U.S Army in worn-torn Afghanistan. The monologue had Robert Downey Jr. 's signature "badassness" written all over it.
I really enjoyed the first movie for its action-packed scenes and the strong, sexual tension between his character and his secretary who is played by Oscar award-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow. I want a make-out session soon. I am looking forward to this sequel because Scarlett Johnassen is in it and that I know that Downey and Cheadle will persuade all the comic book geeks to spend their money on this movie. Don Cheadle will replace Terrence Howard (after an unsuccessful financial negotiation) in the sequel and he will continue to play the Rhodey Rhodes character and Iron Man's much anticipated sidekick, War Machine. Two Iron Mans kicking ass?! I'll have what he's having!
Let me clarify my stance on current movies. I love goofy, silly movies, but when it comes to being nominated and being praised for one's work during awards season, mediocre movies should not be included within the lists and lists of potential winners. Avatar will win many technical and cinematography awards, but for Best Picture or Best Director, there are better candidates. I just want to clear that up.
Anyway, I will dedicate every Saturday or Sunday from now on with a Masterpiece Theater. Lots of good movies are coming up this year and I will be posting trailers and screenshots of movies that I think people should look more into. Now many will criticize me for being a hypocrite because some of my movie picks may be less credible than even Avatar. Well, you may be right, but these movies that I will promote are not Oscar material. Just the typical popcorn, soda, in your seat, entertainment movies. You see, I think there is room for these types of movies in Hollywood, yet I demand more original, innovative films in the future.
First off, Kick-Ass! I want to see this movie, not because of its main character played by Brit Aaron Johnson, but because of the supporting actress in this movie adaptation of the Mark Miller comic book, Chloe Moretz. She plays Hit-Girl, the quintessential bad ass, precocious "superhero" that I wish I could be. She is only 12 years old and she is shooting and dodging bullets that will make Keanu Reeves proud of for a daughter if he had one in the Matrix.
Moretz did most of her own stunts in this film! She is so young! I think it is the feminist in me that enjoys when female actresses do not portray the stereotypical female roles. I just hope this movie lives up or goes beyond my expectations of a comic book action movie because I have seen some failed comic book franchises. *cough* Spiderman *cough*. I might even check out the comic book before watching this movie to compare and contrast the movie and comic book. The movie comes on in theaters nationwide April 16, 2010. And it better be kick ass or I want my $10 back!
For months, I have tried to develop in a Sex in the City blog post for your viewing pleasure. The former hit HBO series and now movie franchise has been analyzed so critically by second-wave feminists and sociologists for years, one day I might devote a blog post or two all to the topic. But if I do, I have to devote some of my time to watch the whole six seasons on my own with a fresh set of eyes. I have not seen all the TV episodes, but I have a sense of what these four talented, successful women represent in the dialogue about commercialization and women's issues in the 21st century.
In May 2008, the first movie adaptation was a box-office success. It brought women, gay men, and cynics like me all in one movie room. The teaser trailer of the highly-anticipated sequel was launched today online. I hope this movie lives up to its expectations. I hear rumors that this movie will center around how Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte began friends and how they all got their start in New York City.
Another sequel is pushing it for me. I tend to hate movie sequels and trilogies altogether so we will see. The sequel is expected to be out nationwide next summer. Check the trailer below.
